The Plan!

I don't think I've ever said exactly what I plan to do for my new dress.  Or if I did, it was a long time ago.

First off, the fabric.  It is the same fabric as my red venetian, just in black and gold.

That fabric immediately made me think of The Phoenix Portrait and similar gowns from the early 1570's.

It's certainly not the same pattern, but it is the same color scheme.  I like the curve on the bodice and the details around the neckline as well as the pearls.  The look is just very elegant.  I'm not crazy about the sleeves, though and I can't find a fabric I like for a forepart.  So I chose another few portraits for inspiration.

For the sleeves.  They are unique, but not off the wall for the period.

This one shows the skirt shape very nicely and it's an example of a closed skirt on the style of dress I'm aiming for.

Next I needed to decide what to put on my head.  I keep running across images like this:

I'm not even entirely sure what kind of hat is it.  I might be a sort of coif, though in some images they look more like a French Hood or something with a bit of stiffening.  I'll have to do more thinking and investigating before I decide what I'm going to do.

I also liked all of the above portraits because they show gowns from that period with a pattern in them.  They are smaller, more delicate patterns than mine, but there are certainly patterns like that in earlier periods and at the same time in other regions, so I feel pretty comfortable using it.

Right now I'm working on a new corset and a petticoat lined with baby flannel to give a little bit of poof under the skirt pleats, without a bumroll, and to help the skirt flow over the farthingale.  The dress will be trimmed with gold lace and hopefully pearl details if I find the time.  I started a gathered silk organza partlet as well.  I already have ruffs I purchased from The Renaissance Tailor, and I want to rework a necklace I bought into a girdle.

All by August 23. :)

OMG! That is the *exact*same*fabric* I used for my Venetian! I swear it is! Is it 100% silk damask? I thought I bought the last 7 yards of it on the planet!!! Do you know if there's any more left out there?

(And just in case it worried you, I am not freaked out about you using the same fabric for a project. That's not how I roll. ;) )

Well, upon closer inspection, I guess it really isn't exactly the same, but it's so close! LOL!

It's really close. I thought of your Venetian when I saw it.
